The landscape, dominated by vineyards, appears remarkably organized and relatively undiversified. Yet, wooded areas and fields of grain lie alongside the vines.

The most striking feature, however, remains the Charente River, "the most beautiful moat in the kingdom," according to Henry IV of France, navigable for 100&nbsp;km. The water is clear, the fish plentiful, and the banks magnificent; a succession of small churches, villages, and farms, all set within a rich and varied natural environment. The renovated locks offer pleasant stopping points for boats; tranquility reigns supreme, and even the ever-increasing number of day-trippers respect the fishermen's siesta.
