As of the [[2020 United States census|2020 census]], the county had a population of 30,233. Of the residents, 20.2% were under the age of 18 and 22.6% were 65 years of age or older; the median age was 45.3 years. The racial makeup of the county was 91.5% White, 0.8% [[African Americans|Black or African American]], 0.3% [[Native Americans in the United States|American Indian and Alaska Native]], 1.2% [[Asian Americans|Asian]], 0.7% from some other race, and 5.5% from [[Multiracial Americans|two or more races]]. [[Hispanic and Latino Americans|Hispanic or Latino]] residents of any race comprised 2.0% of the population.<ref name="Census2020PL"/>

There were 12,654 households in the county, of which 25.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them and 25.3% had a female householder with no spouse or partner present. About 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.<ref name="Census2020DP"/>

There were 15,997 housing units, of which 20.9% were vacant. Among occupied housing units, 73.3% were owner-occupied and 26.7% were renter-occupied. The homeowner vacancy rate was 1.9% and the rental vacancy rate was 7.2%.<ref name="Census2020DP"/>
