===Pre-urban===
Until the late 19th century, Stanmore was a small rural community. In the [[Middle Ages]], a monastic community of cell of [[Canons Regular|Augustinian Canons]] was established at [[Bentley Priory]]. It was dissolved in 1536 during the [[dissolution of the monasteries]].<ref name="manors">[http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=22466&strquery=bentley ''Victoria County History'', Middlesex, Harrow including Pinner, Manors, 1971]</ref> One of the really old surviving buildings are the Cottrell cottages built c. 1565.
