The '''Town of Charlton''' is located in the southwestern part of the county and is north of [[Schenectady, New York|Schenectady]]. The town is home to the [[Charlton Historic District]], which is home to many historic buildings.

The region was first settled ''circa'' 1680 by travelers from the small village of [[Charlton, Worcestershire|Charlton]], located in Worcestershire, United Kingdom. The town was formed in 1792<ref name=":0">{{Cite web |title=Charlton New York Government site |url=https://www.townofcharltonny.gov/about}}</ref> from the [[Ballston, New York|Town of Ballston]], immediately after Saratoga County was established.  The town was previously known as "Freehold"<ref name=":0" /> due to the number of settlers from [[New Jersey]].

==Geography==
According to the [[United States Census Bureau]], the town has a total area of {{convert|32.8|sqmi|km2}}, of which {{convert|32.8|sqmi|km2}}  is land and {{convert|0.04|sqmi|km2}}  (0.06%) is water.

The southern town line is the border of [[Schenectady County, New York|Schenectady County]], and the western town boundary is the border of [[Montgomery County, New York|Montgomery County]].

[[New York State Route 67]] (Amsterdam Road) is an east-west highway which intersects [[New York State Route 147]], a north-south highway, north of West Charlton.

The town borders [[Galway, New York|Galway]] to the North, [[Ballston, New York|Ballston]] to the east, [[Glenville, New York|Glenville]] to the south, and [[Amsterdam (town), New York|Amsterdam]] to the west.

The population density was {{convert|120.5|PD/sqmi|PD/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  There were 1,464 housing units at an average density of {{convert|44.6|/sqmi|/km2|sp=us|adj=off}}.  The racial makeup of the town was 98.46% [[White (U.S. Census)|White]], 0.28% [[African American (U.S. Census)|African American]], 0.15% [[Native American (U.S. Census)|Native American]], 0.32% [[Asian (U.S. Census)|Asian]], 0.10% from [[Race (United States Census)|other races]], and 0.68% from two or more races. [[Hispanic (U.S. Census)|Hispanic]] or [[Latino (U.S. Census)|Latino]] of any race were 0.96% of the population.

There were 2,429 households, out of which 34.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 75.4% were [[Marriage|married couples]] living together, 5.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 15.7% were non-families. 12.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.  The average household size was 2.74 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 31.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 years of age or older.  The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males.  For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.0 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $102,059, and the per capita income was $46,884.
