Lawrenceville is a city in and the county seat of Lawrence County, Illinois, United States,[3] located along the Embarras River. As of the 2020 census, Lawrenceville had a population of 4,164.[4] Lawrenceville is located in southeast Illinois, northwest of Vincennes, Indiana.
Geography
According to the 2021 census gazetteer files, Lawrenceville has a total area of 2.16 square miles (5.59 km2), all land.[5]
Climate
According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Lawrenceville has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. The hottest temperature recorded in Lawrenceville was 107 °F (41.7 °C) on June 29, 2012, while the coldest temperature recorded was −19 °F (−28.3 °C) on January 19, 1994.[6]
Demographics
2020 census
As of the 2020 census, Lawrenceville had a population of 4,164 and 1,796 households.[7][8] The population density was 1,924.21 inhabitants per square mile (742.94/km2). There were 2,071 housing units at an average density of 957.02 per square mile (369.51/km2).[7]
The median age was 39.7 years. 22.8% of residents were under the age of 18 and 20.3% were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 90.4 males, and for every 100 females age 18 and over there were 86.4 males age 18 and over.[7]
98.2% of residents lived in urban areas, while 1.8% lived in rural areas.[9]
Of households, 26.9% had children under the age of 18 living in them. 35.1% were married-couple households, 20.3% were households with a male householder and no spouse or partner present, and 35.5% were households with a female householder and no spouse or partner present. About 37.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 18.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.[7]
Of housing units, 13.3% were vacant. The homeowner vacancy rate was 1.9% and the rental vacancy rate was 12.3%.[7]

The median income for a household in the city was $41,004, and the median income for a family was $43,100. Males had a median income of $32,226 versus $27,577 for females. The per capita income for the city was $24,600. About 14.8% of families and 19.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 34.2% of those under age 18 and 4.1% of those age 65 or over.
